The Firefly Trail is Athens's newest rail-trail. It crosses the historic railroad trestle downtown — an Athens landmark famous from the cover of a legendary local band's first album — and heads east for about 2.5 paved miles.
The route
- Distance: about 2.5 miles (one way).
- Terrain: flat paved path.
- Connects to: the North Oconee River Greenway and Dudley Park.
Tips
- Stop on the trestle for the photo.
- Run it back for 5 miles.
- Summer evenings bring the fireflies that gave it its name.
