Camelback Mountain is Phoenix's most famous climb. The Park Mile route is the Echo Canyon Trail: about 1.2 miles to the summit, with around 1,400 feet of climbing and views over the whole valley.

The route

  • Distance: about 1.2 miles to the summit (one way).
  • Terrain: steep, rocky trail with handrails in places — hands may be needed.
  • Getting down: same way back; take your time on the descent.

Tips

  • Never go in the midday heat — the trail closes on extreme heat days.
  • Bring more water than you think.
  • Walking counts — this one is about reaching the top.
